Merriam Webster Dictionary describes Hypocrisy as: "A feigning to be what one is not or to believe what one does not; especially : the false assumption of an appearance of virtue or religion.
There are many types of Hypocrites, among them:

1.   Politicians worldwide, who proclaim one thing to get votes, once in office they do something else.

In the United States hypocrites are to be found in both parties. Senators on both sides of the aisle proclaim "We need to cut health care costs, but don't touch the health care insurance companies that provide Americans with the best health care in the world." That's right - don't touch the insurance companies that keep on raising premiums, that use 30 cents of every premium dollar for advertising, to pay campaign expenses of their congressional supporters and to increase profits.

A review of the Open Secrets web site reveals that in 2008 and 2009, Health insurers contributed $2.2 million to the top 10 members of the U.S. Senate and House. Drug manufacturers contributed $3.3 million to the top 10 recipients in each legislative body. In all, health insurers and drug manufacturers contributed $24,220,976 to the current members of Congress in the last two election cycles. Notably the top recipients were, at the same time, the most outspoken opponents of the Health Care Reform legislation, in particular the "public option" provision - Sen. John McCain over $500,000, Sen. McConnell $420,000, Sen. Max Baucus over $400,000, Sen. Lieberman $297,000, Congressman John Boehner over $250,000.

When Sen McConnell keeps repeating that most Americans don't want the Health Care Reform Bill, he is partially right. At least 60% want health care reform (as earlier polls showed). But they want real reform, not the over 1000 page mess that the legislators came up with, that protects the insurance and drug industries and does little to rein in runaway health care costs (as quoted by Bob Herbert, NYT 1/5/10).

In simple terms, these politicians are hypocrites. They were elected to represent the will of the majority of the people, but once elected they care more about defending the rights of the lobbyists that generously pour money into their coffers.

What about the politicians that cry about the huge government deficit adding trillions to the national debt? At the same time they oppose any measures to reduce the deficit, such as increase taxes on large incomes, whether of the top 5% of wealthiest individuals, or of the few large corporations that earn high profits. Those same politicians also resist restoring the restrictions on Wall Street and large banks; restrictions that were introduced during the first 80 years of the 20th century under both Democratic and Republican administrations. The reduction of those restrictions, especially during the Reagan and Bush administrations, allowed the enormous gambles of the financial institutions which have brought us to the present economic crisis.

No wonder that in the most recent Gallup honesty and ethics poll of November 2009, congressmen were given a "high" rating of only 9%, equal to stockbrokers, and slightly better than car salesmen (6%) and HMO managers (8%). Lawyers (13%) and bankers (19%) rated a little better. The highest rating of 83% was given to nurses. Medical doctors, police officers, and engineers all scored close, at 65%, 63% and 62% respectively.

2.   Religious leaders of all faiths have been equally guilty of the sin of Hypocrisy.

They preach fear and hate although the basic tenets of their religions teach love and forgiveness. They proclaim a love of God and quote Holy messengers, whether Jesus, or Mohammed, or Moses. Then they incite their followers to violence against those whose interpretations of those same teachings differ even slightly from their own.

Witness the persecution of non-conforming Christians by the Puritans in New England, the same Puritans who had fled from England in search of religious freedom!
Witness the attacks by Islamic suicide bombers against members of a different branch of Islam, even at weddings, funerals or in pilgrimages to holy shrines. See the truth of the Qu'ran

3.   Many of us cannot avoid being classified as hypocrites?

We cry about the loss of jobs, the closing of local businesses. But if it is not our own job or source of income, do we really care? To save a few pennies we drive miles to super-stores, like Walmart, which has done more than any other company to destroy American suppliers and local businesses.
One of the reasons that west European businesses, such as Phillips, Ericcson or Fiat, manage to weather the onslaught of cheap imports, is that inherently Europeans read labels and instinctively prefer locally made products, even at slightly higher cost.

How many of you have not voted in national or state elections? Did you say to yourself: "I don't like either candidate. Anyway my vote doesn't matter."

It was exactly this attitude of many voters that allowed Hitler's Nazi Party to gain control of Germany's parliament and government in 1933! Yes, in democratic elections. Once in power, of course they eliminated the opposition.

I would like to hear your comments. However, many have told me that greedy Wall Street executives are to blame for the crisis, not the absence of restrictions. Sounds just like the N.R.A. saying guns don't kill! The purpose of the restrictions introduced after the great depression of the 1930s was to make it difficult for greed to lead once more to disaster.
